Evolution of a Studio Practice: The Work Continues

This journal has revolved around my enriching experiences running a small textile/fiber studio.  Now more than ever I am revived and inspired to continue recording my reflections on those experiences.  After a year of health issues, I have returned to the studio to reunite the many strands of my practice and forge a path forward.  Here’s a recap/update of how things have unfolded/are unfolding so far this year.  My focus until recently has been my wearable work so I will start with it. Surface Design Workshop I

This past weekend I facilitated the first Surface Design Workshop at Studio Mariposa.*  This first level is essentially an introduction to using thickened fiber-reactive dyes on cloth.   I kept the palette very simple but the results were just amazing!  It was a really inspiring weekend for all of us.  What follows are photographs of the work at different stages.  They are fairly chronological, i.e., the stages leading up to and including removal of the work from the table for setting are first, followed by the presentation (and discussion).  The last images are of my demo pieces, both discharge and positive…

Immersed….

I have been experimenting with botanical extracts and I am completely hooked….I have already fabricated some wearables from these goods (images soon) and I feel so energized!  Full circle and returning to my plant roots!  (Addendum 8.8.2013:  My enthusiasm for these early encounters with natural dyes have been tempered slightly following the recent workshop at Arrowmont with Catharine Ellis but I feel no less energized!)
