2-D: Black Walnut

Black Walnut Ink

I began incorporating Black Walnut Hulls (often locally harvested) into my 2-D work in 2020. Hulls are cooked down to render a usable extract/stain to which a binder is added (see extraction process below). Work here also includes “India” ink (jet black) and wax resist. Pieces are painted and enhanced with brush and nib pen. Finished works are on archival paper. Color Note: The color of Black walnut stain is difficult to capture accurately- it is a cooler hue than many tannins once applied to paper or cloth. It can be cooled even further with an iron modifier.. Must be seen to be appreciated!
